What It Measures

VO₂ Max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. During the test, you wear a fitted mask while cycling or running as the workload increases in controlled stages.

The system measures the oxygen you inhale and the carbon dioxide you exhale. This allows us to evaluate cardiorespiratory fitness directly and identify the thresholds that shape how your body responds as intensity rises.

Wearables and age-based formulas can be useful for trends. Laboratory gas analysis provides a direct physiological measurement for establishing your baseline.

Why It Matters

Cardiorespiratory fitness is a meaningful health signal.

Large observational studies consistently associate higher cardiorespiratory fitness with lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risk. The American Heart Association has advocated for greater clinical recognition of cardiorespiratory fitness because of its predictive value.

That does not mean a VO₂ Max result predicts an individual lifespan or proves causation. It means cardiorespiratory fitness provides useful context—and, unlike age, it is a capacity that can often respond to training.

My watch already estimates VO₂ Max. Why test?

A wearable estimates VO₂ Max using variables such as heart rate, pace and an algorithm. Laboratory testing measures respiratory gas exchange directly. Both can be useful, but they are not the same type of measurement.

Do I need to be an athlete?

No. The workload begins at a manageable level and progresses according to the testing protocol. Your result reflects your current capacity, whatever the starting point.

How difficult is the test?

A true maximal assessment becomes challenging near the end. The protocol progresses gradually, and your team will explain the stopping criteria and coach you throughout the test.

Is VO₂ Max testing appropriate for everyone?

No. Screening matters, particularly for people with cardiovascular, pulmonary or other medical concerns. Tell the team about health conditions, symptoms and medications before testing.

What is considered a good result?

Interpretation depends on age, sex, testing protocol and individual context. Your current number matters, but the direction of change over time can be more useful than chasing a universal score.

When should I retest?

The appropriate interval depends on your objective and training plan. Many structured programs use a later retest after enough time has passed for a meaningful adaptation to be detectable.
